I think I may have lucked upon another potential way to connect with people in the dating context.

Yes, I admit its not perhaps conventional but actually I am having some good banter with a few ladies on IG and its quite nice. How singe any of them are seems irrelevant at this point

Can IG work, I think it can because pictures paint a portrait of a life to some extent and superficially you can decided "well she does really cool things" or "wow he has an interesting life".

I prefer Facebook, usually through friends that I see we share. For instance, if I see a pretty lady that shares a friendship with one of my own FB friends, I'll contact her with, "Hey, I noticed we are mutual friends with these people, I'm surprised we haven't run into each other." or "Small world, funny that we know the same people. lol."

Some icebreaker that acknowledges our knowledge of the some friends on Facebook.

It has worked for me recently and she lives locally. What was kind of funny she did tell me she was on her guard at first, but when she saw how many indirect friends we shared, it was no big deal to her.

I had this one female friend tell me that's it's creepy and she had purposely turned on her privacy settings so we could already see each other's mutual friends (the ones we both were already friends with).

Apparently, she got complaints from her other female friends that HER friends were trying to talk to her. lol.

Note to self, "Don't make this friend a wingman(woman)" lol

I don't really used FB, probably due to a lack of friends. Perhaps social media is beneficial for dating after all or for interaction at the least.

Yeah but I think there's a pretty big chance that you'll run into a catfish, if your main use for Instagram is looking for dates. A lot of people just use it for the attention, so you might be talking to a guy who stole some girl's pictures. Instagram is probably one of the easiest ways to catfish people
