Intense eye contact, no smile - what does this mean?

There's this guy I know (I would classify him as a casual acquaintance - we see each other somewhat regularly but don't really talk that much) who I admittedly do think is nice to look at, and almost every time we meet, we would lock eyes for what seems like forever.

I would consider this a good sign if he smiled, but as it is I'm not sure if he's interested, just curious, or has some kind of problem with me.

On my part, I usually smile at everyone, and I used to smile at him before I started noticing how good-looking he was. Lately though, it's like whenever I see him I'm hypnotized and can't do anything but look into eyes.

So 2 questions really:

1. What does it possibly mean when a guy consistently makes eye contact contact with a girl without smiling?

2. What does a guy possibly think when a girl consistently makes eye contact with him without smiling?

When you smiled at him while you two are making eye contact do you notice if his gaze softens? Does his gaze seem empty? maybe like he's just picked a spot to look at and happens to be your eyes yet he's deep in thought about something else, not related to you at all?

Maybe go talk to him and ask him for a coffee!

I think you misunderstood. I used to smile at him when he was just someone I barely noticed, never mind had prolonged eye contact with. These days I DON'T smile at him, because I don't see him often and when I do see him, it's always unexpectedly so I freeze and forget how to smile until he's out of sight.

Not sure, but I think what keeps happening between us is something like a staring contest. It's not hostile or intimidating, like what I've experienced with another guy, it's just... intense. Again, I'd take it as a good sign if it weren't for the lack of smile.

He seems pretty confident if he does in fact find you attractive. The average guy would look at you then quickly look away as to not appear creepy.

Generally the only other reason that a man would stare at anyone without losing his gaze is during a bout of intimidation usually before he gets in a fight with another male. I doubt that's the case here unless he's psychotic.

Take it from me: The biggest sign that a man is into you is not what he does to you per se but it's how he treats you different in relation to everyone else in the room. Never forget that. :)

Have fun. Good luck and let us know if things progress for the better.

Um.. I know that it's pure attraction if someone looks at me in the eyes and his face "softens" (like someone else said).

Otherwise, I see expressionless eye contact as a way to assert dominance, which I dislike - it has made me uncomfortable in the past. Maybe he's into you but he's also a controlling kind of guy? :p

A friend of mine does this, generally upon seeing me again after our last interaction was really positive. I assume it's his inadvertent way of expressing that he's happy to see me again...beyond that, I don't bother thinking about it.

Deer in the headlight move.

Some people really don't know what they're doing. Or maybe he was looking through you at something else.
