Contacting mutual friends on Facebook

I was wondering, I have some friends on Facebook and as I browse through their friends list I sometimes couldn't help but notice some share mutual friends with me.

Sometimes, I see they may even share a good amount. Like 5 or 6 friends. When it's that many and/or esp. if they live locally...as this is a small town...I was wondering if it's a good idea to touch base with them? Kind of get my feelers out that way as I've kind of exhausted the online dating options around here.

Sometimes, I'm met with a welcome, others...non-responsive. So it's a 50/50 shot.

Usually my opener is, "Hey, I've noticed we share the same mutual friends here on Facebook, so how long have you been living in <name if town>.

Would it be any less unsettling someone to contact someone you don't know as long as you share a good amount of mutual friends on Facebook?

Usually these people just send me a friend request. I always ignore them if I've never met or interacted with the person.

If we share mutual friends, especially if it's more than one or two I don't mind as much as when people request me where we have no mutual friends and I'm not even sure how they've come to find me to begin with.

I mean, if they sent me a message with the request and the message was interesting and piqued my interest I'd accept it. It also depends on who the mutual friends are lol. I mean my circles on FB range from my current network with my grad school friends and often their friends are also people in some grad program somewhere in my field or something and they end up being good people to know or I can gauge certain things about them and I'm more likely to accept them if our mutual friends are people I value or who go to my school or something. But for example, if our mutual friends are people I went to high school with or some people I don't really have much in common with then I'd figure we probably won't have much in common either. So the mutual friends are like references tbh and depending on who our mutual friends are also reflects on whether or not I feel you're someone I want to know.

Agree with this.

Plus, the messages may not even get through, depending on the security settings of the individual.
