People who don't keep up with pop culture

I'm sure most of us here are familiar with seasons of Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, The Walking Dead, Arrested Development, etc, etc. or other pop culture events.

I'm sure you've been at work and people would be chatting around the water cooler about the episode of "whatever" that they saw last night.

Or movie buffs who talk about movies etc.

However, does it kind of sap the wind out of your sails when you bring up a commonly watch TV show or recent movie when they reply with "I don't watch TV or go to the movies, Netflix, or whatever"? It's like, you really don't have much to talk about other than that I suppose.

Is it a dealbreaker that your mate doesn't watch TV if you don't watch TV? Is it a dealbreaker if you watch TV that you would like someone to watch TV or keep up with pop culture or keeping up with the latest trends?

I know some people that love sports that won't date someone who doesn't like sports (I know I don't), but...I shouldn't think it be a complete dealbreaker, yes...no?

I fit this. I'm way out of step with pop culture and could care less, so it wouldn't be dealbreaker for me. I watch documentaries when I watch tv.

Nope.

It doesn't bother me. I have lots of things to talk about besides what's on tv or out at the movies.

It's odd that you're assuming everyone is watching these shows. It depends on your social circle. Yes, some of the people I know watch them, I have some shows I watch, I keep up with some aspects of popular culture, but I also know everyone isn't into that.Fortunately, my interests are vast and varied. In fact, come to think of it, when I meet people I never ask them about shows...I mean it may have come up in conversation, but I can't tell the last I met someone and the conversation was about what movie they last watched. I was just at a party on Saturday, not once was that a conversation. Let me see what were the conversations I had: I asked about their work (it's also because I'm around a lot of researchers, PhDs etc so it's always interesting to hear about people's research and projects), we talked about traveling and where we went last winter or for spring break or wanted to go to next, we talked about the dating scene, we had a debate over best cocktail, we talked about 90s music of our childhood (which is pop culture I suppose), we talked about lots of stuff...no movies or tv shows came up though.

I mean if you haven't the foggiest clue of anything popular it may be a little irritating, but I would be more turned off by someone who seemed to only be able to converse about tv shows or movies but otherwise had no other talking points or life experiences that were interesting besides staring at a screen.

I'm mostly big on 80s pop culture, even attend 80s related events as even "Joysticks" is an 80s retro-style bar opening up soon.

I cringe when someone has never seen the movie JAWS a movie based off the Peter Benchley's novel.

Also, I do free lance coverage of pop culture as well on the side.

OK so pop culture is very interesting to you, and I can see where someone with no interest in it whatsoever, or even an active disinterest in it, could be a bit of a deal- breaker for you.

I don't need anyone to be absolutely up to speed on everything, but I'd at least like them to be generally aware. So I don't need you to know what happened on Walking Dead last week, but I'd like you to be aware that there is a show called Walking Dead that half the world watches. :)

That's funny OP, cause we feel the same thing about you... Do you really have that little to do in your life that you'd sit down and watch TV for what will add up to a fraction of your life? What do you do for work? Are you sitting there too? Do you not read books, or enjoy the various cultures that you're immersed in? What's your deal? Any physical activities? I don't wan't pancaked-assed partner who knows more about a TV show than they do about the world around them- or the universe with in themselves. Sure watching TV and movies are entertaining, but it's not a lifestyle- at least not a healthy or respectable one.

Thank god for the hype though, it make it's pretty easy to weed out people that are not participating this society or reality. Enjoy your programs! :D

I actually do get out to meet people at Sci-Fi conventions, attend celebrity panels with Patrick Stewart, William Shatner with others as well. I even do strategy board gaming with others too all the while discussing Star Trek and such. LOL

However, there's another side of me that enjoys hiking and kayaking the outdoors.

So your culture and lifestyle revolves around the shows you're watching while you're sitting around, and you want someone else who does that? I get it.

I bet you haven't hiked or Kayaked in a long time, don't go there. The way it was added as an afterthought resonates. ;)

Everything you're ingesting while watching TV is manufactured stimilulation... And most of it, or too much of it, is detrimental to your (as well as the collective society's) well being.

The fact it was added as an afterthought is irrelevant. You aren't aware of what I do on my free time outside the home. I can actually watch a single episode of a TV show that's aired once a week and have plenty of time for other cultured activities. :-)

I have lost touch with most modern and music and I am perfectly happy with that fact.

well, i am not "most of us" if these are the yardstick. i have vaguely heard of these programs but haven't seen episodes of any. why? they are all on cable, right? so... some people - to answer your question - aren't "hip" to pop culture because we aren't paying extra for cable/netflix/etc. services. if my SO was hip to all of these i'd think he was spending way too much time watching tv and i certainly don't want that in a partner. tv sucks life right out of you like a vacuum - wasted life and hours. i don't care if my partner was watching all these shows, but if that was his only interest? yikes.

As someone who has not seen a single episode of any of those shows, any person who watched even one would throw up a big red flag for me. Huge!

I'd say that someone who was into these shows would only be good for a FWB situation.

Wait, why is it " talking silly" when I say it but perfectly valid when you say it? I'm confused ...

Pop culture wins all the time. Most people can't name the president of Russia or are aware that the nex big war will involve it with the conflict in Ukraine or the South China Sea territory dispute...

Hell, on Jay Leno's "J-Walking" bit, people on the street couldn't even recognize the picture of the Alamo and called it Mt. Rushmore...so...I really blame the education system these days.

I'm not that deep into the pop culture and yeah, it has cut me off from some people - but none of them were people I'd have liked to know to be honest. Shallow and interested in only what the TV served them in the afternoon instead of following their own pursuits, meh. Boring.

I know some people that love sports that won't date someone who doesn't like sports (I know I don't), but...I shouldn't think it be a complete dealbreaker, yes...no?

I've never seen any of these things you mention and I don't own a TV.

I hope I have better conversations with people than to rehash some script someone wrote.

IMO, people who just waste their lives watching TV are too boring.

I'll watch a tiny bit online, but that's it. If someone watched all the time or made me watch.... deal breaker.
