How to Ask Out a Best Friend

Okay, for starters, I'm just gonna say I'm 13. Get that one out of the way.

So, there's this girl we'll call Adriana (Not Her Real Name). She just turned 15.We've been best friends for five years. We became best friends when she was cast as Clara (the main part) in the Nutcracker and I was cast as Fritz (Clara's sister). We played these roles for 2 years in a row, and then eventually took on new parts. Anyways, I moved down to Florida from Indiana to continue my ballet training on a more serious state about 6 months ago. She stayed up North. We text a lot and she'll tell me she misses me and will send me little messages like "Wish you were here! <3". We've FaceTimed once and mainly have just texted since. Anyways, I came back up on the 22nd to see her in The Nutcracker. We talked a TON afterwards. When I left Indy 6 months ago, I was a little shorter than her, and now I'm a few inches taller. My voice has deepened, my muscles have gotten bigger and I've re-styled my hair. She even told me "John (not my real name), you look so attractive!" Anyways, when we first saw each other, we hugged for like 5 minutes. After that I gave her a necklace which had a Nutcracker, Christmas Tree, & a Ballerina charm on it. She has since told me it's her favorite necklace and that she hasn't taken it off since I gave it to her. This is how she told me.

TEXT MESSAGE CONVERSATION

Adriana: Guess What Necklace I'm Wearing?

Me: Does it by any chance have something to do with a Nutcracker, Tree, & a Ballerina?

Adriana: Hmm, it does! How'd you know?

Me: Wild Guess

Adriana: Man, you're good!

Adriana: It's literally like my fav necklace. I haven't taken it off since last night!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This morning, she texted me "Merry Christmas!" and put a heart emoticon. Do you think she likes me? We also figured out she MIGHT be moving down to Florida to live with us so she can study at the same ballet school as I do.

Anyways, we decided we wanted to hang out a little more, so her parents are going to meet up with mine and get something to eat while me & Adriana walk around the mall and go shopping in a few days. How do I ask her out? Should I buy her something nice? Should I take her to a restaurant? I have a budget of $150 so it can't be too much. Any suggestions? Do I just like, grab her hand out of the blue? What should I do? There will be Christmas decorations; do I get her under some mistletoe? Lol what do I do?

First of all, cool that you're studying ballet. And I have to ask: you guys played the character of Fritz as a girl? (You said "Clara's sister" - was that a mistake?)

Anyway, I don't have any one big huge piece of advice, but some small comments. I don't really know how romance goes between 13 and 15 year-olds these days, but here goes...

I don't think you need to buy her more things. Don't shower her with stuff - the one thing you gave her was right on - she obviously treasures it. Let that be it for now. Don't compete with yourself right away. Maybe later.

A $150 budget for a meal together seems huge to me. Don't try to make a huge, gigantic gesture. As a matter of fact, don't think of this as if you are in search of a goal of making a gesture that is big and symbolic in itself. Again, you will only end up competing with yourself, trying to come up with new gestures to prove yourself.

What you should concentrate on instead is creating a way to spend time together in a setting that works, but make the goal about enjoying the time together.

It's already pretty obvious that she "likes you" (although that can have a lot of meanings and stuff), and that she certainly loves the necklace, and doesn't mind telling you about it, so I'm guessing she appreciates that it is a reminder of you. Good stuff.

My main suggestion: don't try to come up with some kind of huge deal, some big, blockbuster demonstration or anything like that. I don't think you need to make a big splash or some big gesture to get her attention - that's already happening.

Now just look for ways to create time when you can spend some good time together, find out how much you enjoy each other's company, and create some fun experiences and memories together.

It's probably hard, at your age, to hear "go slow", but a lot of kids your age are dealing with a situation where "she doesn't know I exist". You don't have that problem; you're past that point. Go gently, and focus not on big gestures or expensive meals or gifts, but find ways to enjoy each others company.

Ahh.. just wanted to acknowledge that I saw this. This could certainly complicate things, whether you do enter into some kind of romantic relationship, or whether you don't, or whether you do, and then it ends or changes unfavorably at some point. That could get sticky.

One more reason for going slow at this point and just focus on enjoying each others company.
