What does this mean when a guy says this?

I asked this guy if he was looking for a girlfriend, he replied, "I usually play it by ear and and have no expectations for this stuff."

It means he is not looking for a girlfriend.

Means he is keeping his options open, looking for that gem that will make him commit. Until then, he's going to play the field.

It means he doesn't seek out a GF but if an amazing woman fell into his lap he might be open to it. It also probably means you are not that woman & he doesn't want anything serious with you at this point.

It means what it says really.

But a more in depth answer: if the answer isn't a clear yes it's no. He isn't looking for a gf. And answering in this way is a good way to let the other person know he's not but still sort of leaving it open so it doesn't sound so bad if and when he tries to hookup, as he knows some women will allow it thinking that they can win him over eventually to wanting one, but really his answer is a no.

I've used this exact line, when younger, in the face of a rapid aggressive proposition from a woman neighbour I was meeting for tea for only the second time. It took me by surprise and I had to fend her off. I also knew she saw other men. I wasn't unattracted to her at all, I was just scared - like I say, I was younger. Literally, second time we meet, in her house drinking a cuppa, and she asks if I'm interested in seeing her. I'm 24, I barely know her, I see her with other men, I'm her neighbour it could get messy, she had a daughter, it was just too much and an inexpert delivery on her part to just dump it out there like that. So I choked and said pretty much what your man there said.

6 months later we revisited it and it went better. Moral of the story is, if some guys said this because you just seemed to be hitting on him from nowhere, you might just have panicked him.
