Dealbreaker OLD - No smiling in pics

Recommended Posts

Often times I hear about some others are being given online dating tips or having a low success rate with online dating. One tip that had occured to me as when in the past I used to browse profiles I'd come across someone's profile and they'd have 5 pictures...in all of those pictures, none of them were smiling...not even slightly.

In fact they had some kind of *itch look on their face or had a chip on their shoulder, but basically that's how they seem to come off just by looking at them.

Typically, this is likely to be a deal breaker and the tip, would obviously be of course to smile in your photos. Perhaps one get better results, right?

I preferred to see a smile but if the person looked happy enough or at least not pi$$ed off in all the photos it wasn't a deal breaker.

Until a few years ago, I rarely smiled in photos. DH Still doesn't.

Ahh, if all of the photos have a very specific smile, show all teeth like a shark, it turns me off. If they are all melancholy it turns me off (unless there is a witty caption to captivate the sentiment). If there are a mixture of activity photos, some smiling, some not, a few not looking at camera, and none showing all teeth like a shark, then that is ideal for me.

The premise is be natural, be oneself.

No smiling then my first question is "Do you have teeth?"

If all photos include a ball cap, first question is "I you head always cold"?

All hunting photos, first question is "Do you live off the grid in a cabin somewhere?"

The non-smiling thing bugs me, too. I don't think it's a conscious dealbreaker for me, but when clicking through photos quickly (no, next!, next!, no, heck no, no, maybe, no, next... you get the idea) I'm sure I respond better to profiles where the woman smiles.

I smile a lot. I'm especially goofy and I love to joke around, and the ruanchiedt joke with the right coy smile makes it non offensive and such.

However, I can NOT fake smile for a camera to save my life ( see avatar. I'm hammered in that picture and trying to smile and it looks like I had a stroke ).

Right, it's more of a subconscious deal breaker as you thumb through the personal ads.

You are likely to contact/respond to those that do smile in their pictures.

When I smile, I look like Benito Mussolini trying to act goofy.

Some women look like ditzes when they smile... it's hard for me to take them seriously when they look ditzy.

Then again there are cultural exceptions. A Greek might smile when he's very angry. A few years ago, some guy from Japan almost didn't get a driver's license when he refused to smile for his DMV photo. Finally a translator explained to the DMV that the man thought smiling for his photo would mean he didn't take driving seriously... in the Japanese culture, smiling in a serious situation = thoughtlessness.

You're just splittin' hairs, dude.

Studies on OLD have shown that the guys who don't smile in their pics actually have better chances. This is just like the women who complain about guys taking pics with their shirts off. They say they don't like it, but those guys have more success with OLD as well.

What you might be referring to isn't a study on OLD but a general attractiveness study with references to OLD. I would take the results with a grain of salt considering most of the subjects' fairly young age.

Kind of like my philosophy of going to a job interview. If you can't put your best foot forward when you are trying to make a good impression (cloths, attitude, presentation) at the beginning, it usually doesn't bode well for the future. Someone who cannot smile when trying to attract someone probably isn't going to smile much when in the everyday mundane living of life.

Then there is me! I hate my smile. I always think that it makes me look goofy and so I try a more straight-laced look because I think it makes me look more handsome. So, what the heck do I know! I honestly hate the whole online dating approach anyway. Never had much success myself - could be my lack of smiling! LOL...

Another deal breaker is when the picture they use (and usually only one they have) looks like a mugshot. It makes me wonder whats up.

Another is always wearing a hat or always have sunglasses on. We want to see the whole face/head/etc.

I usually wonder if they have bad teeth and, if wearing a hat or the top half of the photo is cropped, are they bald?

I prefer smiling photos. Would you approach someone with a blank stare or someone who seemed pleasant?
