POF and "I have a job" in profiles

Recommended Posts

Something I noticed a lot of. In the "Profession" area of the profile, some people type in "I have a job" or "I work", but don't put in what line of work their in...not even a general idea.

Why do they keep such things a secret? Does it mean their unemployed or something?

You would have to ask them that question. I am sure they each have their own reasons.

They're unemployed

They're embarrassed that it's a bad job

They want to avoid gold diggers

They are a secret agent

They are a mystery shopper

They think their job would be off-putting eg. military or funeral director

They want to save that conversation for messages or first date

Millions of reasons.

I've noticed that when I go on a first meet with a new woman, we do the initial howdy-do's and chit-chat for a few minutes, but it seems they're mostly trying not to open with the first serious interview question... "tell me about your job." You can sense the change of tone and demeanor as they finally shift into business mode. They try to keep it sounding casual but you can feel the switch. I think it's rather comical. Like when a car salesman asks qualifying questions and pretends it's because he cares and wants to know all about you.

Maybe they don't think people should be selecting them based on what they do, but they want to indicate that they do actually have a job.

Not sure why you immediately assume that it's a lie.

Do you lose sleep pondering over the actions of people you don't know?

Yeah, maybe they are embarrassed or avoiding gold diggers. On my profile, I would put "work full-time." Not really saying what I do, because I'm embarrassed, and its not really a "career."

I talked to a girl online that had her job listed on her profile and random creepers started showing up at her work. No bueno.

I'm a private guy. I don't even like having my picture online, let alone my work. I don't blame anyone who hides personal info.

I seriously doubted they were able to show up their work place if their profile said, "Customer Service Representative" as their job.

I guess it depends on how you define "personal".

I am always suspicious of this and pass on by most times. When I see it it usually follows that the rest of the profile isn't up to my liking anyway.

I assume that it's sketchy that they put that, as if they had a job they liked or were proud of they'd put it. It's not as though they're required to state their place of business....how can simply saying what your profession is lead to people showing up at your job???? That makes no sense.

Your profession does not tell anything about the exact location of where you work. Putting "Teacher" doesn't tell the school, "Doctor" doesn't tell the hospital, clinic or practice, "Plumber" doesn't say where you work either...so that's ridiculous.

What I want to know is why do you jump to the worst possible conclusion that you can think of?

They aren't keeping it a secret unless you ask them what they do and they refuse to answer your questions.

I am not 'live' on OLD just now but I have my profile to show that I work and also I have it set showing that I rent my home and don't own/mortgage it to fend off the gold diggers.

My salary is also undisclosed but you can post numbers on the site I use.

My height and weight are shown though but many won't post their weight.

This post is to get an idea of what others think of those who think of people withholding such basic information. Just an overall "What do you think when you see a dating profile and the person is...."

Just a discussion.

Some people don't like their jobs and don't want to talk about them, or are looking for something better. In this economy not only are many unemployed but the ones who have jobs are often underemployed. I think women are lucky in this regard because most men who have good jobs don't care what the woman does, as long as she is working.

I wouldn't discuss my job, even vaguely, because it's not difficult for people to work it out. If you say I live in this city, and I work at even 'this type of establishment' there may only be a handful in the city so it becomes quite obvious by a process of elimination. I can't discuss what I exactly do and who for online because a) as soon as I do that, anything I write becomes linked to the company and they can discipline or fire me if I bring them into disrepute and b) it makes it easy for people to find you when you don't want them to. Also, in my case, c) my job is unusual and dangerous enough that all I would get are messages asking me about it and how I handle it and it's not the biggest part of my personality.

I say something vague such as 'I work helping people'. As it happens, I'm incredibly proud of my job, it pays well, it has good status, and it's an educated professional role. When I had jobs like retail sales assistant or cashier I was much less bothered about letting people know.
