Can't send Private Messages

I'm a relatively new member (but I think I am "established", as I show as "Member" to the left of my posts...) When I try to send a Private Message, either by clicking on a Member's name in a post and selecting "Send a Private Message to Xxxx", or by going to a member's Public Profile and clicking on the "Send a private message..." link, I get a page with the following error:

Quote:
Trimmer, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?

2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
I've read through the recent threads in this forum, as well as the FAQ. I've also looked through all the options in My Profile, and I may have missed something, but I can't find anything about whether Private Messages need to be "turned on" or anything like that.

I also don't see a "Private Messaging" section in my control panel, as suggested by the FAQ.

Anyone have any suggestions for troubleshooting? Thanks.

You have to turn on your options to receive and send PM's. I tried sending you a PM just now and it says it won't let me. Go to your profile/CP and change the option there.

Hope this helps, if it doesn't then maybe use the contact us link and ask one of the mods to help ya out.

I believe you also need to have a minimum of 50 posts before it is active. Right now your profile shows 30!

OK - I've triple-checked my Profile/CP and don't find any option for turning on PM, so I'll assume for the moment that it's a # of posts threshold. It's just that the error message doesn't make that very clear - it makes it sound like I'm trying to hack into somewhere I shouldn't be... Also the FAQ on Private Messaging just says that "registered members may send each other private messages." But anyway, that's fine. It's probably a good idea to set a threshold. If anybody knows for sure what the threshold is, I'd appreciate knowing it - otherwise I'll just assume 933KJL's "50" is the number. So now, after this post, I have to come up with 19 more clever, thoughtful things to say. Jeez, that's gonna take forever!

Thanks.

It's in 'Edit Options' under 'Messaging & Notification'. I thought it was 30 posts.

Nope - All I have under Edit Options is "Receive Email" (from Admins) and "Default Thread Subscription Mode". And I'm over 30 posts now, so I'm shooting for 50.

WWIU: I was actually joking about the fact that it may take my whole life to come up with 19 different, clever thoughts... I'm actually excessively verbal enough that I'm sure it won't really take too long...

You could start a thread of your own. If it's interesting enough you'll get plenty posts to reply to.

Welcome to LoveShack.org!

Access to private messages is determined through a somewhat randomized function of participation and membership time. Posting large numbers of posts won't get you access any quicker, nor will waiting long periods of time. We limit private messages to those members who establish themselves as active participants on the site.

New members often confuse PMs as a method of contacting individuals privately regarding topical discussions rather than posting on the public threads. This severely limits the number and variety of perspectives and insights our community has to offer. Private messages were not intended as a tool for on-topic discussion and we want to make sure participants coming into the community are aware of the role of this function.

For more information, see our Community Guidelines.

We'll look into making this clearer for new members.

Best wishes,
Paul

Thanks, Paul -

The thought originally came up because I had considered sending a PM to a member as additional encouragement/support (already expressed in the forum) to seek some counseling/professional help or something like that. However, in that particular instance the recipient was a first time poster anyway, I now realize, so they wouldn't have been in a position to receive a PM, even if I had been able to send one...

I understand and support the LS philosophy of keeping topical discussions public, and I appreciate your followup.

So my need, for the moment, has effectively passed. I'm not in any hurry; I'll be around. Just for future reference, once a member eventually trips the threshold (I have a math background, and I love your phrase "a somewhat randomized function..." ), is it an automatic process, or does one have to request being turned on?

Shouldn't this be in the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Practices section?
