is it over for good or is there a chance in the future?

Hey everyone.

I split up with my boyfriend of 2.5years on tuesday. Initially I thought it was because he didn't love me anymore but yesterday, we went out for the day together and he said that he still loves me and that he doesn't want another girlfriend because he has done/been through so much with me that he wouldn't want to do it again with somebody else.
He said that because we have been together since we were 17 and have been wrapped up in a 'cacoon' with each other. He says that all his friends have changed and are doing different things now and he barely noticed because it was always about me and him. Apparently we need to stop being a couple and start being ourselves for a while.

I totally agree because we are young and if we stayed together for another 2.5years we would only end up resenting each other plus i am doing my degree at the moment and intened to go travelling later, that aside I am still totally heart broken, my boyfriend says that we won't lose touch with each other and that maybe in a few years we will get back together.

we are being totally civil about everything and he has even paid half of next months rent so i am not stuck before i find a new housemate.

sorry for the long rant but I would appreciate your views on it. do you think it sounds like he does still want me or that he's fobbing me off?

I think your b/f is a wise young man and you're a wise young woman. It's never a good idea to get into a long-term, exclusive relationship at 17 years of age. The both of you have too much to learn and experience to be tied down so young. Maybe in a few years the two of you can hook up for an adult relationship and maybe not. I know you hurt, but you already understand that this is for the best. Remain friends for life. You've shared something very special.
