Question how do you define a "slut"

i've been wondering-

what does everyone think defines a "slut."

a friend of mine told me that a girl who had "been with 15 or more people is a slut."

i've heard others say that a slut is someone who cheats on their partner, sleeps with other peoples partners, or sleeps with random people and/or people they do not know at all.

others have said a slut is someone that doesn't even necessarily have sex with people but is a "tease" or "behaves in a lewd way"

what do you think a slut is? do you believe guys can be sluts too?

my opinion is that a slut is someone who has no ethics at all when it comes to sex. this person will sleep with married or committed people, and basically anyone that comes along with no remorse at all or consideration for who they are hurting. i don't think there is a "magic number" that will define if you are a slut or not. i also believe that guys can be sluts too and its just as unattractive in a guy as it is a girl. i really wish the double standard would go away! i know i am not impressed by "slutty" guys and neither are any girls i know...if anything they just seem like walking std machines and it's not really impressing anyone if they behave like an animal in the wild.....just my opinion....also, what do you think "makes" a person a slut, in accordance with your definition of the word. yet another perspective on this was from my roommate who says she thinks that being raped or molested makes people turn into "sluts."

what do you think??

Arrow just what i think

i thought this was a funny and interesting post....

what do i think a slut is???? well i have to agree with your opinion....i think that if someone sleeps with people without caring at all as to who they are hurting well then that is definitely a slut. i know i have had some encounters with "sluts" in my lifetime and they can make a person's life a living hell.

as to what causes it...i don't think anyone really knows that. perhaps it is just a selfish personality or a person that has a dire need for attention. i don't full heartedly believe in the sluts have no self esteem thing. the sluts i know probably have more self esteem than they need and seem to get gratification out of having people look at them in that way or to show that they can get a certain guy/girl to be seduced by them and give in to them.

yes i believe guys can be sluts too and i'm not impressed by it either. guys need to get that. and an std machine may not be a bad way of saying it....i'm sure sluts are in high risk category for stds and the like.

i don't think being raped or molested could cause someone to be a slut, i thought that would have the opposite effect but i could be wrong.

hmm

i agree that a slut is somebody who'll sleep with just about anyone, just for the heck of it. it includes but isn't limited to lack of considerations of others' feelings.

as for the causes of it ... there's a saying in my language: "prostitute is a profession; slut is a vocation" - i think this says it all =)

i've never understood this...

seriously, i really don't understand the urge to define promiscuity. it seems like its usually an exercise in giving people a chance to judge arbitrarily. it also seems to me people often do so because they have a limited understanding of the vast spectrum/cultural development of sexuality- for anyone interested in a more rigorous definition, try out foucault's history of sexuality, especially the first volume.

but let me give it a chance anyway:

\Slut\, n. [OE. slutte; cf. OD. slodde a slut, Icel. sl["o]ttr a heavy, loglike fellow, slota to droop.] 1. An untidy woman; a slattern. in common usage, a term used to describe women (or occasionally men) who in some way act outside the boundaries of what the dominant homogeneous culture has deemed acceptable sexuality, again, especially for women. depending on the level of prudity of the definer, 'sluttiness' can be as basic as a low-cut shirt or as complex as sleeping with hundreds of partners.

i think a slut in my definition would be britney spears. she dresses sleazy and acts it at times, but yet denies it and is said to be "sweet". a slut is someone who doesnt have standards.....who dresses slutty and doesnt really care about being a lady.

I think the term applies equally well to EITHER gender:

One who has sexual relations without the corresponding emotional foundation.

I don't think it requires a certain number of partners or a certain attire. It does require mental and emotional issues that manifest by way of sexual "acting out." A woman could have had 10 partners, each within the bounds of a dedicated relationship....that's not a slut. A woman could have had 3 partners, all one-night stands, and that would be a slut.

The main problem is that this sort of behavior indicates some deeper issues that need to be resolved. THAT is what is unattractive about it. I refuse to get in a relationship with someone who needs fixing.

Agreed. Have had to do enough of my own fixing to be with someone who needs more fixing! Of course this could be why both you and I are single now, eh, Ryan?

I blame my solitude on the foul odor I continuously emit.

A whore is someone who has sex for money.

A tramp is someone who has sex with another person's spouse (or perhaps S.O.).

A slut is someone who is promiscuous, having multiple sex partners week by week, who don't know or care about the others. This is different from an open menage' a trois relationship, or serial monogomy, where one has sex with a new boy/girlfriend next week or next month.

None of these terms has anything to do with how you dress. If someone ever says your makeup or clothes make you look like a whore, maybe they should learn that some whores look like homeless women- unwashed, too many shirts, without wearing any makeup, and others look like they're going to a fancy restaurant or church.

Sometimes one is called a slut because one is getting more sex than the insulter, or it seems one is popular (platonically) with the opposite sex.

Sluts are basically women (or men) who only really care about themselves sexually. They could care less about their partner's feelings, only about their own selfish pleasure. They cheat, lie, do whatever it takes to get what THEY want. Not the type of person anybody would really want to get involved with on an emotional level.

according to a former male roomate, "a slut is a girl who has sex with everyone. A bitch is a girl who has sex with everyone but me!"
