It stings like hell. And not particularly in a good way.
But it's alot of fun to stalk and shoot other people.
As said above. No matter how much layer of clothes you have on, you will have bruises BUT it wouldn't be as bad if you only had one layer . It stings like crazy and it can bleed too [depending on speed of the marker].
Most girls are afraid to play but me, I love the stalking and shooting so it's one of the sports I am into. In fact, our team will be playing in the next Championship next month!

I'm considering going with two layers - not sure yet, but I'm thinking sweats, with old jeans on the top layer.
For some reason, I feel the denim with help me feel like I have more protection. Big old jacket.
I don't want to buy any gear unless I'm positive I like it. So making do right now.

That's what I know I'll be good at...stalking and shooting.
It's the bleeding and bruises that I'm having second thoughts about.
But I made the decision I will try not to cry no matter what.

Are you playing Arena type Paintball, or Woodsball?
It actually does make a difference for adjusting your FPS (and how much it's goin' to sting) when playing either or, in Arena you want a lower fps somewhere around 250-265 (or about 10 bps/25.5%) it gives better curvature to your ball (useful for shooting around corners) and also hurts considerably less at close distance, where as woodsball the distances are typically greater, so you'll want to adjust the FPS somewhere from 320-380 FPS (15 bps) (I wouldn't advise going above 320 unless you're prepared to deal with some blood or a broken face mask) The trade off to the obvious greater accuracy for distance, is that at close range it hurts like all get out, and really makes you think twice before running through an open field.
Also it really depends on what kind of gear you're towing. For Arena a long sleeve shirt will suffice if you're not afraid of getting a few cuts and bruises. Woodsball, you typically want Multilayer Camo, you can of course wear one layer, but you'll want to make some kind of custom ghillie suit, doesn't have to be fancy, but it'll definitely prevent people from easily spotting you unless they're right up close. I generally wear camo + jacket/flack jacket. The extra layer really helps in case you get ambushed.

What's the pain like?
It's like getting snapped on your skin by a rubber band point blank range (i mean pulled riiiiight back)...kinda like that. But it goes away after several seconds. Sometimes the paintball won't break (especially in cold weather) when it hits you and those hurt. The pain will last a bit longer but it will go away faster too.
Tip: Definitely do wear gloves, 'cause hits close to the bone hurt the most. Jeans and denims are good. Layers too.
It's really not as bad as i make it sound. You'll be so pumped up on adrenaline that you won't feel much anyway. Have fun.
Just don't go dying on us Deux, we want you back in one piece, to hear all ya kick ass battle stories.

For a lot of people the adrenaline deadens the pain so much that you don't even notice much. I've been hit multiple times and had it not splattered I wouldn't have noticed. And they are right about the gloves. You said you wanted to avoid buying gear, the one thing I will recommend is some paintball gloves. They have a shell type thing to protect your hand. Which is one of the most painful spots to get hit. Most places don't rent out gloves that I've seen.
I'm going to assume your going to an actual paintball place. It is probably best to go there first. It is safer and people will have their guns chrono'd correctly. Plus you can usually rent from them to determine if you like it. I miss playing. Haven't had enough money for it in a while. Expensive sport, but very addicting and a lot of fun.
