Ever had one repaired? What kind and how did the procedure go for you?

Well, I can tell you my mother had a hernia in the lower abdomen for two decades. She was scared of the surgery and refused to deal with it until it became a life-or-death situation and she had to be rushed to the hospital.

The surgery involved removing over 55 cm (about 22 inches) of her large intestine where gangrene had begun. She stayed in the hospital for a week and a half.

As a result, her bowel movements changed a lot. She went from having one daily bowel movement before the surgery, to 4 or 5 during the recovery period. Five years later, she still goes 2 or 3 times a day and the doctor said that's not likely going to change. Some of it might be caused by her high fiber diet, though.

Other than that, the recovery was complete about two months after, and she was advised against carrying heavy things and doing any kind of strenuous work. Nowadays, she's fine and has no issues stemming from the hernia or the surgery besides the increased bowel movement frequency and an ugly scar.

Hernia repair is an extremely simple operation. Most can be performed with laproscopy, ensuring the incision is tiny and nearly invisible after healing. An inguinal hernia is a bit more simple to repair than a hiatal hernia, which appears on the esophagus. Rarely are hernia's life threatening but they can be. It's really best to have them repaired early as they are a tear in the muscle and can continue to get larger with age.

I had two umbilical hernias repaired this past December. One was directly behind my belly button, the other off and up to the left.

I have a scar that's about two inches long just beneath the belly button. It was not a difficult surgery to recover from, though I still encounter pain now that I've picked back up with physical activity i.e., tennis, running/walking, sex.

The worst part was the "liquid breakfast" you're required to eat the next morning. Chicken broth, water/tea, jello.

Oh yes, and I forgot to mention the morphine and vicodin.

Made it pretty easy to deal with.
