Unhappy :I am worried about working 4 10 hour shifts??

Well, I just got a job offer recently and I never worked 4 10 hour days before and they have overtime as required.I'm not so sure if they're going to make work another 6 hours on Friday right away because I am mentally challenged.Does anyone have tips for me of how to deal with it?

Mentally challenged? Please elaborate on what you mean by mentally challenged?

The 4 10 hour shifts is just another way to get a 40 hour work week in 4 days instead of 5 days.

I am learning disabled in which I have a hard time focusing. And I'm not so sure if I can handle a 10 hour day.But they do have second shift from 4:15 to 12:15 though.I am undecided on the shift I should take.

Depending on your situation, each shift has its own pros and cons.

There are ways to work on focusing on the task at hand and it will take time to work things out. The hard part is to get it started and focusing on tasks are that are boring.

Some ideas are to block out your times and work on those tasks based on priority and severity. Just have to work on allocating time to tasks regardless of liking the task or not.

What would you be doing for these ten hours? What type of work is it? Is the employer aware of your challenges? How many breaks would you get? How long will the meal break be? These are all things to consider.

I'll be welding tubes together for cafeteria tables for schools and I'll have a team of welders around me so I won't be the only one welding.I get two ten minute breaks and one half hour lunch. The hours are from 6:00 am to 4:30 p.m.And they'll train me for the first 8 weeks. The overtime is from 6 am to 12 pm with two 15 min breaks I believe. And they are aware of my challanges.

It doesn't sound like it would be too stressful but it may be physically challenging, is that something you can do for a long period of time? (be on your feet, lift)

The people who hired you probably feel confident in your abilities to perform this job. Which aspect of the long hours are you worried about? Are you afraid that it will be too tiering? Too much work?

Probably getting started at first I haven't worked since last August.I'm afraid it'll be too tiring and maybe too much work.Well, my last job that I had I was a part time welder/painter but then they piled stuff on me like couple of days before the work had to be finished of course it was a three man job.

If having a hard time focusing makes someone mentally challenged, I think most of us will be in that category. I believe it's called attention deficit disorder, which is a condition I blieve most of us have but in different degress.

What else other than having a hard time focusing makes you label yourself as "mentally challenged?"

We all get a bit overwhelmed and stressed out when starting a new job, there is always a lot to learn and get used to. I would suggest not worrying too much. They are training you for 8 weeks which shows that they are going to invest significant time in you and get you comfortable with everything. If you start to feel too much work piling on talk to someone about it. But for now, congratulations on the new job and don't worry. Also, 3 day weekends are awesome!

Sounds like you like routine versus stress and pressures of overtime and completing the task.

Instead of rushing or feel that you are being rushed, I would suggest working faster and smarter instead of rushing to get it done. IMO, the best work is to get it done right the first time.

During the training ask questions and seek some wisdom on different weld points, temperatures and other things. If might give you an idea of doing the job better and with less stress.

I'm not going to lie to you, this job sounds horrible. But if you need the money just take if for now, and becasue of the weird hours you work you'll have plenty of oportunities to look for a new job which if you look hard I can gaurantee you'll have in a maximum of 5 months.

If that's your definition of mentally challenged, I think most, if not all of us are mentally challenged.
