Engagement Ring

When a couple break up, is the ring returned or can it be kept?

If you break up before the wedding the ring should be returned to the one who bought it. It was given with the condition of marriage. After having been married it belongs to the woman.

You should return it. What really is the point of keeping something that was given to you as a promise of marriage.

When we broke up, I gave it back and felt much better about it.

Been there done that! The ring goes back to the donor if no marriage is executed. The only exception is if the donor cheats or breaks off the wedding. This is the legality in most states.

Cheers!

So I'm divorced -- once before and right smack in the middle of another. Two rings. What do I do with them? The first one will go to my daughter, as it was given to me by her father. But should my first born, my son get it? I just don't know. The second one sits in my jewelery box along with the first, no biological children. What do I do with that one? Give it back or keep it? Oh and I have a gold band too from marriage number two because I always preferred that over the diamonds. He has one too. I keep mine, he keeps his???? I never really thought about who gets what.

If the woman breaks off the engagement or cheated I think she should return the ring. If the ring is a family heirloom, I think it should be returned no matter who breaks the engagement. In the event the man cheated, I think the woman should be able to keep the ring, but I would still give it back. After the marriage everybody keeps their own rings. That's my opinion, I have no legal information. This question pops up almost monthly.

Keep it. A friend had a very nice solitaire from a previous marriage put into a pendant on a chain. Her diamond was fairly large. She kept the piece for herself as they had no children and a subsequent marriage produced a son. I can't imagine my son having any use for the ring, but yours could sell it on ebay, I suppose, if you feel obligated to give him the ring. You could always pawn a ring or sell it on ebay yourself. I, too, have both my wedding rings and each will go to my daughters from each marriage at some point if they want them. I have no use for them and they have been sitting in the jewelry box for years. My first ring was small, 1/4 carat I think, but in a very pretty setting. I still like the look of it. My second ring was a simple band with 12 very small diamonds in a trench-like cutout. The total CW was 1/8. Neither ring has much monetary value or would make an impressive pendant in my case.

Yup, if the guy breaks trust or the engagement, girl keeps it. Girl breaks either, he gets it back. Many girls give it back regardless, particularly if they don't want the reminder. I mean how much more dramatic can you get if you throw the ring back at him, lol.

I gave one back - but then he insisted I keep it (I knew he would because he still wanted to get back together).

One I sold to a pawn shop, while he was still paying for it, because I found out he had lied to me about a situation during our engagement that was pretty substantial.

I threw one at my ex-H when I told him it was over. He took it and did whatever he wanted to with it and I was glad to be rid of it.

To me if the woman breaks it off or cheats she should return it. If the man cheats on her, breaks it off or abuses her she should keep it. After my ex cheated on me I pinned her down on the floor and took it right off her finger because she refused to give it back.
