When it comes back tomorrow, it may STILL not be used for chat. If that happens it will be taken down forever. I personally put it up several years ago, and renew it annually, so people who just want to talk about whatever pops into their minds have a place to post. IT IS NOT MEANT AS A PLACE WHERE MEMBERS CAN TALK BACK AND FORTH TO EACH OTHER. IT NEVER, EVER WAS MEANT FOR THAT PURPOSE AND THE FIRST POST OF EACH YEAR STATES THAT CLEARLY.
The off topic thread was just something I conjured up as a treat for the membership. There are so many places to chat on the Internet all you need to do is exchange information in PMs and away you can go into heavenly chat on AIM, Yahoo, MSN or wherever.

People should be addressing the topic of the original thread...NOT talking about how many times they farted during the last hour; what part of their lunch they threw up in front of the boss; whether Joe or Tom has been banned from the site and for what; if they had good sex the night before, etc.
In other words, if the talk is constructive and works toward a discovery of truth that is helpful to the OP, it's just fine. Off topic banter has absolutely nothing to do with the thread topic, does not make the world a better place, is highly insignificant to most other people and that's what we normally get after five to ten responses in an average thread.
The part you quoted above refers to the off topic thread...which is meant for people to talk about whatever they want to talk about....BUT NOT TO CONVERSE WITH OTHERS....NOT TO TALK BACK AND FORTH AS IF USING INSTANT MESSAGES. It is bizarre that people don't understand this.
Thank you for your question. That I have to explain this over and over is symptomatic of why we really can't stay on topic in these forums...I think.

At the same time, and this might be why some of us are having a hard time grasping the logic of the off-topic thread, if I want to start a topic about anything, I'm allowed to do so in the Watercooler sub-forum, right? How does the off-topic thread then differ from the Water Cooler?

The water cooler is for topics that do not relate to any other part of the forum. You can use it to rant...or to talk about something that happened to you recently...or your new pet....or grandma's great cooking...about your new job...how pissed off your are about your drive to work, etc. However, people who decide to post on your thread need to continue talking to you about what you came there to talk about. The should discuss the topic you have created. If they want to talk about a particular subject, they can start their own thread in the Water Cooler category.
I think people who would start a thread just to talk about anything and everything are extremely lonely or a bit ....well, I won't say it. Anything that has to do with back and forth banter belongs on a chat client, not at LoveShack!

We understand that. We really do. If we have a subject, we can start a thread.
But the very first post of THE "off-topic thread" for the year does NOT have a subject. So what are we supposed to talk about there?

In the off topic thread, you can talk ABOUT ANYTHING WHATSOEVER. It doesn't have to relate to any other post in the thread. You can spill your guts, propose to your partner, talk about your latest bowel movement...anything at all as long as you don't personally attack anybody and you keep it clean. You can ignore people, or you can comment about what they said above. You simply can't get into a long winded conversation with them. That's not what it's for and if you read the first post in that thread you know that already!

If you send me a PM, I will call you via telephone and sit with you until you fully understand. If you read the first post in the off topic thread and don't understand it and nobody around you will take the time to explain it to you I will personally call you and explain because you aren't understanding the typed word. I am serious...I will be very happy to explain it to you via phone. If necessary, I can meet you at the coffee shop of the airport in your town for breakfast one morning...and we can go over it there. I want to do whatever I can to teach the world everything about off topic posts and off topic threads. TRULY I DO!!!

Yes, I will come to the Sydney airport anytime during the months of November and December with two weeks notice. I will remain there until a) you understand all this off topic business or b) I smell so bad from not taking a shower that they throw me out of the airport.
