Men sending mixed signals

I need advice because I am CONFUSED by this man that I met. Brief history. I met this guy at a reggae show and we seemed to get along super good. He was visiting from the west coast where he was attending school. We exchanged phone numbers and email addresses and promised to stay in touch. We started to write each other back and forth for close to a year (we hardly called each other because we both dislike talking on the phone) and I began to feel like maybe there was some sort of spark going on between the two of us. I told him that I was into him. I thought for sure he would tell me if he felt the same way but he didnt. He didnt even acknowledge the fact that I told him. I was like WTF? So I asked him directly ‘do you like me or not?’ and he told me that we didn’t even know what the other person was really like since you cant tell through email.

I had business in LA so I decided that I would visit him while I was there. We spent a few days together and had a really great time and he seemed to be into me. He always had his arms around me and was holding my hand and kissing the back of my neck and watching me when he thought I wasnt looking. I really liked this guy alot and I felt like there was something there. But the last day I was there he turned into a different person. He was really distant and wouldnt hold my hand or really look me in the eyes. He took me to the airport and just gave me a quick hug and left. He never kissed me or anything. Just left. My friends think that its because we live so far away from each other but I dont know. Hes leaving for the UK to do a year of school in some exchange program so maybe thats it? I just don’t know if he likes me or if hes just trying to be polite and not hurt my feelings. Why cant he just tell me how he feels?
