The same level of friendship you are describing and about the same amount of length, is the same as a long distance friend of mine. And I had been talking to him every single day for hours, then abruptly spent days offline and continuous when I did talk to him it was only being a couple comments every once and while. And it wasn't because I no longer liked him or anything of that sort. It was just simply because, realizing I have been neglecting my studies and trying to get my act together- also realizing talking to him (because enjoying his company so much and loosing all sense of time during IMing) was a main distraction. I'm still trying to figure out proper time management- how to both take time for friends and still get ahead with all my academic work on my plate (but haven't figured it out yet quite just yet). Maybe he's just doing the same. I wouldn't worry about it.
