how to break relationship patterns?

what does it mean when your current relationship resembles almost exactly your past one? does it mean you have a problem, for example not letting go of your past or looking too hard for the faults of your ex, or is it simply that your current and ex partner have the same faults?

is there a way to break relationship patterns like this without breaking up with your current partner?
