Does texting create a false sense of familiarity?

My question is exactly what the title implies. Do you think texting/messaging/phone calls really help build a relationship, or impede it by creating a false sense of familiarity early on?

It builds a true sense of familiarity.

No matter if you discuss your common love of tennis with your interst in person or through text, you still have that familiarity.

The medium doesn't change the fact.

I think it only helps AFTER you've met the other person in person. Excessive texting before the first meeting creates a false sense of intimacy.

I think it can create familiarity but I wouldn't hold too much store in it.

It can give opportunity for people to say things they might not necessarily dare say to someone's face.

Some communication prior to first meeting as necessary. Communication too much will cause harm when you do meet.
