Chances are it's not nearly as bad as it is stereotyped among us northerners. In Biloxi I doubt the people can be that inhospitable to other ethnic groups considering that there are already sizable black and Asian (especially Vietnamese) communities in Biloxi.

Haha, I don't know, I will point out though that Mississippi has the highest obesity rate in the US.

There's racists & tolerant people all over the US. There's pretty girls of all races all over the US. I'm sure Biloxi has a mix of bad & good, pretty & ugly and everything in between. I wouldn't worry so much. Just have a genuine & positive attitude.

Biloxi is on the coast, which is much more open minded compared to the rest of the state. You'll be fine for interracial dating there. The rural parts of the state are pretty intolerant, but the same can be said for the rural parts of many states, not just MS or the South. Most people in the South are hyper aware of race because of the bad rap the South gets. A lot of people overcompensate in trying to be fair and tolerant. The true racists are the elderly crowd. People who lived through the Civil Rights movement and younger don't care.

As for safety, you'll be just as safe in Biloxi as anywhere. I'm kind of chuckling that you asked that:-) I'm sure you'll see at least one redneck with a Confederate flag bumper sticker, but that's not the majority.

You would likely be "OK" in Jackson. But remember this, many black people in MS tend to frown upon interracial dating as much as white people do. So be prepared to get looks from all directions. As for dating those beautiful white native MS women, good luck. If it happens, and it does... it's usually on the down low. If discovered, you may be in for a difficult time.

There are parts of ol Miss that are still a bit racist. Stick to the larger cities and you'd do fine. Like here in Bama, Jefferson county, Madison county, and Limestone, you'd have no problems. Walker county would be totally different though.

Because the military is highly integrated, anything near a base should be better than other parts.

However if you want tolerance I'd look any place but the deep south.

What about the northern part like Oxford?

Oxford..... maybe. Since it is a college town, it is slightly more accepted than let's say Hattiesburg. I say this because the black college athletes often date interracially, out in the open. Keep this in mind also, despite being the home of Ole Miss, that campus has had it's share of well publicized racial incidents in recent years.

My hometown is as "po-dunk" backwater part of the state as you can get, but one of my nephews married a white classmate and they have children together now. Her father finally accepted her marrying a black man and his interracial grandchildren, but he is still ashamed of his own daughter. He lost many of his white friends when his daughter married my nephew. Sad but true.... My point is, that if two people love each other... to hell with other people think!

When I was in the first grade in the early 70's, I kissed a little white girl classmate.... I kid you not, her family pulled her out of that school the very next day... never saw her again. By the time I started 4th grade, there was not a single white student left in the entire school. I love my home state, but I am ashamed that even today, it is the most segregated state I visit.

I think you'd be okay in Jackson. Jackson is probably like 80% black, and, like LoveMachine said, blacks are just as against interracial dating as whites.

Maybe, I don't know. Ole Miss is what it is though. They have a large percentage of students in the Greek system, which speaks for itself.

It's arguably the most racially divided state in this country

Why do you say that? I'm not arguing the point but just curious.

I've lived in the Biloxi/Keesler area for 10 years. I've half black/asian dating/living with a white male. No issues here. Its a very diverse area of MS because of the 2 military bases. There are attractive Caucasian women everywhere. Lol. Biloxi is also only an hour from New Orleans, so you're not gonna feel the same racial divide you may get in other parts of the state. It really is a great place to live. You will like it.

Let me also add that though you're going to find racist individuals anywhere you go, people in and around the Biloxi area frown upon that way of thinking and really try to push an "all is accepted" type of behavior.

^^^^Lots of truth in this statement.^^^ But it is still very segregated, more so than any other place in the south.

Hmmm. . . . you really think it's more segregated than any other place in the South? I'd say it's about the same from what I've seen. What about Atlanta and Birmingham?

Yes, sorry to say I do feel that it is.

I lived in ATL for a long time and it is nothing like MS as far as people not being able to come together to socialize, or attend school together. Take going to the average club in MS, 90% of the time it's either all black or it's all white. The public schools are mostly all black in my native area of the state, the only white students still in public school in my birth county, are from poorer families. In my hometown, the public park is used exclusively by blacks, the whites have their own private parks by membership only. My experiences may only be anecdotal, but I still see these things when I visit my family there. The major restaurants and casinos are definitely the exception.

These are just a few example I mention. The funny thing is, you do not get a hostile feeling dealing with people out there, in fact they are very friendly. But when it comes to race, tradition wins out over all else. This goes both ways, not just white people that choose not to integrate, but many black people choose to be separated also.

I will say this, things have gotten better since I was child growing up there. But it is I'd say, 20 years behind Georgia in terms of real desegregation.

That sounds like every place I've ever been love machine. I live in Houston and go to Cali about once a year. It's pretty much the same thing. Segregation due to income. It's not necessarily a hate thing, it's who can afford to live where.

Here if go to the mall, you might see 2 or 3 interracial couples. In Cali you might see 4 or 5. Very little difference despite Texas conservative and California being liberal. Politics are a bunch of bullsh*t.

In the northern cities I've been in including the one I grew up in, things were quite 'segregated', in the sense that neighborhoods were generally white, or black, or occasionally hispanic. Voluntary segregation is hardly a remarkable feature. People who are culturally similar tend to cluster in the same places. In the old days, almost all the Italians would settle in Little Italies, just as the Jews and Polish and other ethnic groups would settle in their own neighborhoods. Even after nationalities assimilated, there is still some residual effect. For example, 3rd or 4th generation Irish, Italian, and Polish Catholics may all end up living in a neighborhood like the one I grew up in, because they are fairly culturally similar to each other. A person of Polish descent will find a few Catholic parishes to attend and a good private Catholic school in an Irish or Italian neighborhood, but may be weirded out by the Pentecostal churches in the black neighborhood. Just one example of how cultural factors influence self-selective ethnic segregation.

Birds of a feather flock together. Goes for ethnicity as much as everything else.

Hi! I'm from Biloxi area, and I live near Keesler.

Down here it's integrated. Not all places in MS are backwards lol. The coast is diverse. I haven't had any major problems with outright racism.

I've been dating interracially for a decade with very few problems other than weird looks, which I don't even notice most of the time.

People who watch tv think we have a bunch of klan rallies and burning crosses everywhere.

Where? Certainly not on the coast. Some areas do tend to be predominantly black, or at least are stereotyped that way. Some places are mostly white. Down here on the coast it's diverse with blacks, whites, good Asian, population, a few Hispanics. We go to school together, go to prom together, shop and the same stores, just like in any state. I can only talk about the coast, but it's a rainbow down here.

Really you can find 'segregation' anywhere. Try ultra wealthy neighborhoods in New York.

I'm going to guess that cities vs. towns are going to make more difference than the aggregate states' individual numbers themselves. For instance, Seattle and Portland often wind up near the top of racially (and otherwise) tolerant cities (though not necessarily diverse, particularly PDX), but Washington State and Oregon typically do not.

This is because the rural areas of both states are pretty darn conservative. Having lived up that way, the townies, coasties, flatbillers, etc. are pretty unfriendly when it comes to any kind of diversity beyond their own specific mantles'.
