How do I become more outgoing/social?

I'm in my 2nd semester of first year at Uni and I do have friends, but i don't really hang out at that much with them save for one. I'm pretty introverted actually and quiet but I want to be more outgoing and have more than just one close friend. I spend too much time in my dorm room actually and want to change this. I see some people in upper years who tend to be alone a lot and I don't want my entire uni experience to be like that. How do I become more outgoing?

Try smiling at people & saying hello. Ask an interesting person from any class if they would like to study. Join an on campus group that interests you. Attend a floor social.

If you can find one near by join a group called ToastMasters. It is really about improving public speaking skills but can help with overcoming shyness & perceived social awkwardness.

Newsflash: everybody feels shy & socially awkward; you are not alone. Once you realize that it's easier to be the one who breaks the ice by saying hi first. Nothing else, just hi

Choose someone who looks interesting to you and just go up an talk to them, someone who looks like they too aren't surrounded by friends.

Do some research on your trait. You'll find it is a Physiological trait not a Psychological one. If you gain a better understanding of how you 'tick' you can enjoy being you more and know your strengths and weaknesses.

These books may help:

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

by Susan Cain

The Highly Sensitive Person:

How To Thrive When The World Overwhelms You

by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D.

This work can provide some food for thought as well.

You don't have to conform to be well liked and amazing ;)

Listen, this is kind of silly, but one way to get people talking at school or work is to bring something small and offer the whole group one. It could be drink tickets or cookies or little school logo keychains or something for a lab or class. If you are in the dorm, this makes it easier. I won't tell you what we used to hand out. But cookies or Hershey's Kisses would do. You don't have to admit it's your idea if you don't want: "Hey, my mom sent me a buttload of these, so I'm sharing so I don't eat them all myself." If you're in a dorm, keep a big bowl of cheap candy that anyone can help themselves to and leave the door open once in awhile.

Before internet, handing out fliers was a way to accomplish this, but I guess those days are gone!

In days of yesteryear I have handed out or strategically placed stickers, a single Elvis playing card from a deck, and single 1950s porn playing cards that I would leave on the door of anyone in my apartment building that looked rowdy and I thought I might want to party with. I wouldn't try that on campus though -- or at all, today.

Well, me and the people in my floor don't speak much as it's pretty much a party one and I'm not good with parties. I do have a good friend on it though and other friends, but not as close with them. I am part of one club.

Go to one of the parties but go early & leave early before people are drunk & stupid.

Try to make a friend in your club. Join another club.

Make an effort to spend more time with the friends of friends.
