I feel guilty for ratting on a co-worker.....

Recommended Posts

Okay, here's the situation......

I work for a marketing firm, we do inside sales, there are 62 employees.

I don't mean to sound like I'm bragging (honest!) but I am one of the top 5 successful salepeople....and because of that I have a very good rapport with management and I'm viewed as a valuable member of the team.

It's kind of a cut-throat, back-stabbing, dog-eat-dog, industry because the competition is stiff - the pressure is on everyone to make good sales because it benefits the company plus the workers are generously rewarded with cash bonuses and high commissions.

I rarely complain about anything, and remain entirely focused on my job.

So here's my problem....2 days ago they hired a new guy who's still in training, and the thing is : I recognized him immediently. Two weeks ago I stopped into my local liquor store, there was a huge scene happening with security escorted out and permanently banning a guy for stealing. IT"S THIS GUY! the one now hired at my company.

We had a couple of incidents last year with theft in the office, purses and wallets being lifted. Also, we work with sensitive security material - we often obtain personal info and credit card numbers from people over the phone.

So I went to my boss, and advised him of what I witnessed at the liquor store. He was VERY interested in hearing this, he pulled out the guy's resume and sure enough this guy's home address is right in that vicinity.

I think they are watching him closely now, and based on the information I provided, I wouldn't be surprised if they let him go.

But I gotta say : I feel like total CRAP out of guilt...I mean isn't it possible that this guy may have completely turned his life around, wanting to be a responsible adult with a full-time good job, maybe he made just that one mistake, or maybe he's a career criminal - heck I dunno....but everyone deserves a second chance, don't they?

I'm thinking I may have f*cked up this guy's future with our company because he's now viewed as untrustworthy.

Should I have kept my big mouth shut? :(

It was two weeks ago. You did the right thing to look out for your company.

I dunno know if I would have done it or not and I can't say if you were right or wrong, but look at it this way. They didn't fire him right away so as long as he keeps his "nose clean" so to speak he'll probably be okay.

If he doesn't do anything bad they have no reason to fire him so relax and know you could have been doing the company/co-workers a big favor!

hard to say, this is a toughie. Are you 100% sure it was him? Could have been his twin brother that he lives with at the same address.

most of the fortune 500 companies i have worked for run a FBI and criminal background check plus credit checks before hiring. but since u are at small place tehy prob don't do that.

as long as he stays clean at work and shows up for work (i.e. no jail time) and performs there is not much an employer can do.

UPDATE.......

I asked my boss tonight "Hey, I haven't seen the new guy that was hired, does he still work here?"

ABSOLUTELY NOT - was the answer.

Apparently his second day in the office he had a shoving match with a long-term employee, who is a quiet quy and never causes any disturbances. Management

had to intervene and pry them apart.

Reason for dismissal ? - 'attitude problem'.

Geez, what a weirdo....I don't feel guilty anymore for tipping -off management.
