Bad Site at Work

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I had an adult site open on my Ipod and I forgot to close it yesterday. When I went into work today I accidentally opened up chrome on my ipod and there is was. I don't think it reloaded the page, but I'm not sure...I usually get a message that the site is blocked (if it happens to be blocked, this is the first time I had a porn site opened at work) and it usually prompts me for credentials, but I basically put my Ipod back in my bad and didn't look at it again until I got home.

I work at a large company and I believe IT would have that kind of stuff blocked, but again it didn't reload (I don't think) so would they be able to trace it to my Ipod? It was probably on their network, but it is my own device.

I'm just nervous because I don't want to be contacted at work to have to explain this.

Can anyone with IT experience be of any assistance? Do they look at this on a regular basis? Do they have better things to do? Can they see it was a one time thing? Should I even be worried?

Thanks for any help!

If the site did not refresh then nothing came through your companies network, so there is nothing for them to track. And in order to tie it to your device (if it did refresh) they would need to know its hardware address, which seems highly unlikely unless you gave it to them, like in order to gain access to their secured networks.

Most people aren't dumb enough to purposefully go and look at porn on their work computers, so if anything ever did come of this, I think your biggest problem is likely the embarrassment rather than fear of a disciplinary. If it gets noticed at work, laugh it off... apologise for the mistake and tell them you though you'd shut it down. Or if you really can't handle that, tell them you gave your iPod to your nephew to borrow for the weekend and he was really embarrassed when you told him what happened... nobody will believe it was your 'nephew' and not just you, of course, but most people will understand it being easier to brush off by blaming someone else than it is to own up to your co-workers that you watch porn.

This kind of thing can happen to anyone and chances are the vast majority of people in your office do or have watched porn in the past, it's really not that big a deal. Not much anyone here can say to guarantee you that work won't find out when we don't know the intricacies of your work computers, filters etc. so I think you should try and get to a place where you're at peace with the possibility of them asking you, because you know it will be okay, rather than spend tonnes of time stressing over 'what if'.

Of course the only exception to this is something illegal.

Just trying to understand... it's your personal device, but you were on company wifi?

If you didn't reload it should be fine.... if it did reload, but wasn't blocked, it wasn't caught by their filters... so unless they go through the logs manually looking for suspicious hits you should be ok.

Hey Gunslinger,

Yes, it was my personal Ipod, but the company's wifi. I'm pretty sure it didn't reload because if it had, I'm almost certain it would have been blocked.

Things a lot less than porn have been blocked at my work before, and I didn't get prompted that it was blocked or ask for my credentials (which it usually does when I load a new page).

This happened on Friday (2/19/2016) and as of today, Monday the 22nd, I haven't been contacted by anyone about this. Not sure how long it would take if I did get caught, but I'll keep you guys posted if anything comes about it.
