Networking sounds very daunting

Recommended Posts

How do you network (especially in investment banking) when you're someone who has just gotten out of university? It would be very hard considering you're on a new social platform (itself like freshman year high school again, which sounds very daunting). Any advice, experience?

It's easier then it sounds. It's about shaking hands & listening.

You need to make a commitment to attend events where you will find potential customers. As a younger person, you also need to start grooming your peers to think of you as they mature & amass the types of portfolios that will eventually need your skill set.

Read some books on the subject; there are a million of them. Develop a firm handshake. Look people in the eyes. Take care to remember their names.

As of now while you are in the 1st years, listen & learn. Ask people who you meet what their ideal customer is & send them business when you can. Do follow up when you meet somebody. Everybody forgets that part so a quick e-mail the next day, or better yet, a snail mail that was personally written & signed is best.

Make sure everybody you know knows what business you are in & has your card: your dentist, your dry cleaner, the person who gets your coffee in the morning, your cousin's next door neighbor. I mean everybody.

If you are really pressed join a networking group like BNI which is a leads generating / referral organization.
