How would you feel if you started a new job and then all of a sudden you find out

Recommended Posts

"the organization is moving?

The place I work for now is moving in June and I found out they are not saying anything about it in the interview which is stupid to me because that person probably applied because of the location. Now they start a new job and get hit with this bombshell and can't quit because you won't get unemployment so probably will be very upset.

They should be telling these people this in the interview so they can make a decision on whether they want the job not hide it and then say..."OH BY THE WAY WE ARE MOVING!

I call this "dirty Business"

Moving where? Is it 40 minutes away from their current location or a few blocks over?

The former is an issue yes... but I don't think the latter should be a problem for most people, which is likely why they didn't mention it. If that's a dealbreaker to you, you probably don't want the job that much in the first place.

It's about 25 mins away from where we are now but it's in a unsafe area. Anyone new will think they are starting a new job in a business type of area only to find out they will be working in the ghetto

If you need the job you move with the company, if you don't you go find another job.. the idea that a company needs to divulge it's future plans to prospective hires when the plans most likely aren't public yet isn't a request that is even possible...

There can be tons of reasons why.. the leases may not have been signed yet or whatever...

I love in a metro area and unless you live next to work everybody's drive is 30mins to one hour every day so these type of things don't matter much to people here unless they move from a city like NY where the density is high and not spread out.

I have had people who applied for jobs that took jobs closer but it was so they didn't have to buy a car and they wanted to use mass transit as they came from NY...

Do you need the job?

It's not the commute it's the UNSAFE AREA.

are you sure its the ghetto, a company is responsible for the safety of it's employees so moving to a war zone would put them in possible future legal trouble...

if it's unsafe they will have to provide escorts to cars and well lit parking lots, that kind of stuff...

Where I am now, commutes are usually at least 45-60 minutes, so if a company moved another 25 minutes further from my house, I'd be pretty pissed and would have to look for another job since an hour is about the maximum I can deal with out here. But I wouldn't expect a company to tell prospective employees about plans to move unless those plans were set in stone and the employee's ability to commute came up as an issue during the interview.

That's what some of the employees have been saying that we are in a unsafe area based on what they saw when they went to visit

How would you look for another job if you just started one? That's the point I am making if someone accepted the job and then hit with this bombshell they would be stuck.

Are you aware that crime happens in all kinds of neighborhoods? Burglars target wealthy suburbs. But since it’s in the ghetto, you will be able to walk to work – very short commute, ‘bro!!!! You have two options – quit or stay and deal with it.puke.gif

So you're pitching a fit over something that you don't know. You've *heard* from some other employees that it's unsafe.

What do these people know anyways? Go check it out yourself or do some fact-based research. If lots of other companies are around your new location, chances are it's actually not that bad.

They said it's no other companies around and it;s like a GHOSTOWN.

Which is why everyone is concerned

My husband is interviewing for a position 40 minutes away, but they did disclose that location would last for a year before they move to a new location. If they are for sure on when and where they are moving, it would be considerate to disclose in the interview...6 months isn't far away.

that sounds awesome. No queues in the shops during lunch hour. Get served in the pub after work quickly. Sounds like a winner to me!

I'm sure they are moving as part of a gentrification project & are most likely getting huge savings on rent.

If you feel unsafe, you feel unsafe.

If you look for a new job, when you meet with prospective employers you simply say you were mislead: you applied for a job with the company on Safe Street & then they moved to Bad Neighborhood Way & you felt unsafe so you are looking for other opportunities. I don't think most employers will hold it against you.

While you are stuck in the bad part of town you take appropriate precautions for your own safety.

1. The employer is under no obligation to disclose to potential employees that they are planning to move 6 months from the interview date.

2. If the employees are not happy about the situation, they can always go look for other jobs. If they can't find a new job, then they need to learn to adapt to the new situation.

That's how I feel.

I agree, unfortunately in this economic climate, it's not so easy just to go and find another job. And if the employer knows for sure they will be relocating in the coming months, it should be disclosed...it could be problematic on both ends if it's not, because the company will have to also take the time and money to retrain another person if someone quits due to the relocation not being disclosed. Some people like myself have transportation issues...I would need to know something that is in the near future like this as I rely on public transit sometimes. It saves time on both ends if employers are up front about these sorts of things.

And I found out because management MISMANAGED funds, that is why we are moving and can't pay the rent. So because of their mismanagement all of their employees lives are now in danger especially the ones who drive. All I did was PRAISE this place last year and for this to happened has me really feeling stupid. And of course I can't go anywhere no time soon because my last job was a termination so I wanted to be at this job for atleast 5 years to overshadow me getting fired from the last job. I am not even mentally ready to be back on the job market after all the mess I been through from 2011-2013. I had not planned on looking for another opportunity until atleast 2017.

Not only that maybe some people can get up and quit because of the financial support they have whether it's a husband, welfare, or lots of savings. And that means they will have to interview all over again and retrain someone.

OP, you're just going on and on around in circles. Nobody has a magic wand. Either discretely look for something else or do nothing. And I can't help but wonder what you consider "ghetto". But like I said, do something or do nothing.

My definition of ghetto

"area with no option to buy food and no other businesses around with the projects nearby"

It sounds like you could be very well on your way to being let go if this company is in bad shape. If it were me, I'd rather find another job before that happens. I was terminated in 2013 after 3 months and I've had 2 jobs since then. The previous one let me go after 5 months due to lack of work, but thankfully I was working this job then as well, so I wasn't left unemployed. In this economy, having multiple jobs isn't that shunned upon if you have good reasoning and your company being in bad shape is a good reason to move on.
