:o i only just finished my massage course and officially became a massage therapist, and my husband is a former massage therapist but he works in computers now. i asked him if its ok for me to do male clients and he said he knows its professional and that it doesnt bother him. but i still am not sure if i should, so do you think its ok or not? :o

I'm not entirely sure (your particular profession might have some exception for it), but my gut instinct is that it's unlawful to refuse to provide a service provided to others based on the person's gender, just as its unlawful to refuse to provide a service based on the person's race.

The other thing is to revisit this issue every now and again to make sure nothing has changed. Many is the time people decide things early on, then later realise that they have changed their minds only for the other person to hold them to the original decision. It can be a source of friction if not managed correctly.

yep i think i will talk about how its going a lot to by husband so he knows its ok :lmao:

if its a massage clinic then i agree the clinic has to treat all. but i'm working from home and one of my friiends works from her home too and she advertises that she only does female clients. she had a bad experience with a male one touching himself during. so she plays it safe now :lmao:

you've just qualified and you're only asking this now...?

how long was your course?

Because when I did my 3-year Shiatsu course, the last year also gave us insight, instructions, guidance and advice on how to run our own business.

If your course was a bona-fide extensive thorough course, dealing with anatomy, pathology and physiology, some aspects of medicine, common physical ailments, illnesses and diseases, they should certainly have covered this.

If this was a six-week condensed course, then you should at least have discussed this with your tutor.

woah you sound mean

same as my course and my course tutor mentioned how some males can take advantage of female massage therapists, as happened to my friend. its my decision of whether i advertise for male clients. i will but wasnt 100% sure of whether my husband was REALLY ok with it or was just saying it. he wouldnt admit it probably even if it bothered him :o

i'm criticising your course tutors or establishment, not you.

If they don't teach you how - how are you going to know these things?

Teaching establishments have a duty to protect you - you're paying good money for your qualifications, they should be able to provide you with a comprehensive experience which will leave you competent in both your field and as a business-person.

FWIW - I'm in the UK.

I had to abandon my practice of therapy, because 90% of callers were men, asking whether i provided 'other services'.

I tried to name my practice Shiatsu therapy, medical massage, accupressure therapy (nobody knew what that was, so that failed and bombed at the first airing!) and Chinese deep treatment.

no good.

If you're going to set up a clinic, the best advice i can give you - is to hire a male receptionist.

The moment men hear a male voice - they either hang up, or ask "is this the right number for"... and then the male receptionist can put them straight.....

I tried at least nine different ways of presenting my professional serious company, but there's only so much you can do to work around the word 'massage'.

It unfortunately has sexual/sensual overtones that men are inexorably unfailingly seek.

I think in my final month, when I just jacked it in, i had received about 700 calls from men - and 12 from women.

i actually ended up seeing all the women - and just 3 of the men.

Just answer the phone in a deep voice. When people show up wear your best fake mustache to greet them. Say the girl will be out in just a moment.

she threw away that towel and only massaged females after that :lmao: actually she doesnt advertise now but just has regular female customers and gets a new one sometimes from word of mouths because each customer has female relatives etc. :lmao:

my husband massaged me a week after we met because he was a massage therapist last year (but not now) and he did not accept my money and we got married this year :lmao:

ooz? Like that stuff that turned ordinary turtles into the mean green fighting machines we now know as the ninja turtles?

I would say if you take men you're bound to have a few horror stories but it might be worth the money... mght not. Do what you feel is best.

oh so this is all your husband being scared. He should get over his fears. You could get a nice group of regulars who are men and tip well who don't fling ooz around the place.

oh its me really because my husband said hes fine with it, but i just fear that it might be a problem anyway (not problem for me but just problem of if my husband ends up not like me doing it, even though no hint of that). i mean im just thinking too much, its probably going to be fine and probably won't change how my husband sees me and he will probably always be fine with it. but im just thinking about it too much :lmao:

i practiced on male and a female and there was no problems with male :lmao:

Working out of your home makes it sound more like sex massage. Can't you work at a clinic or do referrals only from medical specialists?

That would be a waste of money.

A business is a business regardless of whether it's a clinic in a commercial building or a clinic in your own home. You cannot discriminate.

A private business can do what ever it wants. In cases like restaurants refusing to serve blacks the federal government got involved saying it was impeding on interstate comerce or some crap... Although country clubs still do this kind of thing all the time...

In her case refusing to treat men if she decides because she wants to focus on women is perfectly with in her rights.

A business reserves the right to refuse business to anyone

Absolutely not true. A business cannot refuse to do business with someone on the basis of their gender.
