Worried about what I should do when there's a lunch break.

Recommended Posts

I'm never hungry at lunch time or pretty much anytime during the day, until late afternoon. I'm worried that if I get an office job, that if there isn't a cafeteria for me to sit in and just have a coffe or tea, that I just wouldn't know what to do with myself and would feel really awkward when there's a lunch break.

Do I just aimlessly walk around town for an hour? Do I just sit in my car and do nothing for a full hour? Would that look weird?

Rest. You'll need it, trust me. Especially if you've never worked a full day before :)

Seriously, Ross, put off the nitty gritty details til you get your job - some employers will be happy to have you working through lunch even. ;)

I used to feel too awkward/shy going into the canteen, I physically can't eat or drink in situations like that, unless they're close friends, I used to wander around town, or eat my sandwich in a park, you could just have a drink in a cafe. If there is a staff room you could just have a drink there, no-one else will care whether you eat or not, someone might just say aren't you hungry? But no-one will be bothered, it's a non issue :)

Many lunch breaks are only half an hour anyway, not long at all.

You might hit it off with someone you work with, so maybe you could chat to them.

Your work mates might think it's a bit odd if you sat in the car each lunch break, it might look to them like you don't want to be with them. Social phobia can make us look stand offish sometimes, so try to avoid coming across like that if possible.

I often see people having lunch in their car in the street, no-one bats an eyelid :)

Have a cup of tea and coffee and read your newspaper, either in the canteen, on your desk, or in a nearby cafe.

Thanks Denise, that's a good idea, I never thought of that.

Do you guys think that having a phone from 2004, and driving a kind of beat up looking car would give me a really bad image at an office job?

No, I think people generally don't care, unless you're in some high flying set up in the City with really stuck up people.

I also meant to say, (as denise said) you can have a drink/eat at your desk, my partner does this, his whole office does, in fact.

It all depends where you are. Where I am we usually go to morning tea around 11:15 and just chill and someone reads out the daily quiz and we all try answer. It can be tricky as they are all academics and so smart! But of course they all understand if you have work to do or are busy then you don't have to come down then. Same deal with lunch. Lunch is usually around 1 but you can have it when you are hungry really. No one really cares. Sometimes I'll eat my sandwich at my desk while working, other times I'll go get something with some colleagues, sometimes I'll go to the tea room, or sometimes I'll just go for a walk around campus by myself to clear my head. It's all really relaxed and great to work in.

But be careful some workplaces can be a bit Gestapo about it. For example at my mums workplace you have to take your lunch at 12 and if you're not back at exactly 12:30 you get in trouble. It's a bit WTF. I'd recommend you check out the work culture of the places you're thinking of working at as I doubt you'd enjoy this level of authority being brought down on you. I really scored it lucky as like I said you can have lunch when you want for however long you want it (provided of course you do get the work done).

First I would say every once in awhile try to eat in the area of others. Someone might stop by and see you and before you know it you have a new office buddy.

I drove my car into the ground and prefer a basic phone that can make cals. No mature adult cares about such things. Some people do, but you really don't want to get to know them anyways.

You can always do your errands during this time. Another suggestion would be to have a good book to read.

You can do whatever you want at lunch time! In the office where I work people spend their lunch time eating and chatting/watching tv in the kitchen, eat lunch out in a pub, go to supermarket, go to gym, go running, go for a walk, eat at their desk working, sleep at their desk, reading, youtube/facebook, etc.. You should just do what you want to do and what feel comfortable doing.

No one will care about the phone or the car.. Infact, you would probably have more comments if you drove a brand new expensive nice car.

Don't worry, that would not look weird because this would happen with some other persons also. You need to consult a doctor that might help you. And you try to eat something because not eating anything make your energy level low.

I just eat lunch at my desk most of the time. I have access to the internet and we're allowed to use the internet provided we don't gamble or look at porn. Occasionally, I eat lunch with colleagues. Some people run errands during lunch time. Others read a magazine or newspaper at their desk. I've even had two colleagues that napped during their entire lunch hour. They had a way to partition their work space so their napping wasn't visible to others.

I have no idea what kind of car some of my colleagues drive nor do I care. Your image at the office isn't affected by your car. Now if you offer someone a ride in your car, make sure the inside is clean and clutter free. I had a colleague who had boxes of old newspapers, old receipts and other clutter in his car. I still thought he was hardworkig and smart, but I didn't like going to meetings with him in his car because it was stuffed full of things.

It could be, though. If you're concerned about it, park away from work and walk the remainder.

When I had a mandatory lunch break, I mostly read at lunch. Except when I was a teacher in the U.S. for a time---lunch break was 'mandatory' but I mostly spent it planning.

I'm not a fan of lunch breaks. I eat while I work, and I power through my work. But I'm lucky enough to set my own hours at present. When it's busy, that means 80 hour weeks, and then there are weeks like lately. . . when I have way too much workday time to read LS.

But being told to 'step away' at some set time is just weird to me. Most jobs I had didn't have lunch breaks perse though.
