What's the real point of surprise interviews?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I have been looking for a new position for some time now, and last week I got a phone call from a company I have sent my CV to. But unlike the usual procedure (asking me to complete an online assessment, inviting me to attend an assessment day, interview invitation etc), the lady just started asking me the usual interview questions, like:

Why are you interested in this position? Why have you applied? Why this company? Tell me about the experience you had in this position...

(I answered these the best way I could, but then...)

Tell me an example when you had to do this? Tell me an example when you had to do that? What do you think are the 3 most important qualities for this job that you have?

I have been thinking about what sort of information can a recruiter get from a surprise interview like this?

The knowledge that you can think on your feet as well as the assurance that your information is not embellished to suit the paperwork or position.(its harder to lie when you are unprepared)

Thanks 2sure I haven't thought about this, but

1. Why does a company presuppose that I am a liar??

2. Even if they tell you there will be a interview, you can't completely prepare yourself, can you?

I don't understand how can all this be tested better with a surprise interview.

If they tell me I willl have a phone interview in 2 hrs or tomorrow, they can still ask the same questions and evaluate my answers - the outcome would be the same (as far as the content is what matters), because the questions will be surprise questions anyway. In other words, they still can test if I can think on my feet, and if the information I provided them with was altered to suit the position with a regular, but previously arranged phone interview.

So I am thinking, maybe they don't care about any of these things, but they want to test my nervousness?

I just don't get it.

I mean, if somebody calls me from an unknown number, I pick the phone, even if I am very busy, e.g. cooking, trying to calm my children, feed the dog, and fix the dishwasher at the same time, I will pick the phone, and the next minute this person is interviewing me...? And I don't even have the chance to tell them I will call them back in 5?

I am not being bitter or anything, in fact I want to work for them even more now (still waiting for answer). :)

1. Don't answer calls from unknown numbers

2. Don't answer calls if it's looks like a business because you want to give yourself time to prepare

And the purpose of interviews is to see if you are likable and fit in with the existing staff
