I went to my hair dresser today and she pointed out I have small patches of bald spots on my scalp!

I've been under a tremendous amount of stress due to a recent break up and loss of a pregnancy. Has anyone ever had this happen or know what I can do?

My hair dresser is getting me some drops she says I can massage into my scalp, and she said she's seen it in people before and it's usually just a phase.

Yes, I've had it for about 3 years, it started after giving birth and during a stressful time with a break-up, job problems and so on. The hormonal change combined with a LOT of troubles in my life has made my hair thin. It hasn't yet started to grow back thicker, plus I'm in my ealy 40s and I've kind of lost hope. It's the age combined with everything else, and I don't believe in drops, shampoos and all that anymore. Hasn't helped me...

I'm 41 as well. I hope it gets better, but maybe it will be something I will have to live with.:(

I would see a physician anyways just to rule out any other more serious causes.

When my husband died, my hair fell out in clumps. I don't think I had bald patches, but I lost half of my full head of Italian hair. Every shower, I'd get handfuls. It stopped after about 6 months. Best of wishes to you.....

During and since pregnancy, my hair sheds in buckets.

But I do agree that it's worth a trip to the doctor's if you're getting small bald patches.

What kind of drops is your hairdresser suggesting?

I don't know T, she just said she would order me something she'd seen results with. She says she often sees this in women going through periods of stress- and she's seen it go away after a period of time.

I'll let you know when I get it from her.:)

Thanks M- it's amazing how stress can affect our bodies in such a way.

I haven't been eating healthy and I've lost a lot of weight in a short period of time as well.

I had thin hair to begin with- but I abuse my hair. I put in extensions, blonde it once a month...

Oh, I'm not looking for the drops for myself since I wish my hair would shed more!

But I am curious, just to look it up to see what it's supposed to do. Also, before using, discuss it with your doctor or specialist, especially if they end up prescribing something for you.

haha- I hate you! lol.

I'll talk to my Dr. first, before using the drops. I think it's stress related because of the timing.

Noooo...don't hate, it's a pain in the arse. I'm not kidding. 1/2 thickness would be a lot easier to manage.

Hormones too. Your body's still setting down.

I had a couple little bald patches - about ___ wide at one point - last year, after my breakup and while still at my old, heinous job. I'd had them before, during other periods of stress - also pointed out by my hairdresser. This really stressed me out because my hair is really important to me. Haha...

I actually happened to ask my hairdresser last week when I saw her whether she's seen them lately. All gone! Probably why? I have like zero stress.

I'm convinced my hair loss and yours is stress related.

I know exactly what your going through. People dont notice but me and my barber have. Im 25 and my hair is a big part of my looks. Im stressed out from school, break up, and now from losing my hair.

Heres what you should do

See a Dermatologist and have them asses your hair loss and scalp.

then do a blood test and look at:

-Iron

-TSH, T3,T4 (thyroid hormone)

you can take biotin supplements but it probably wouldnt do much

also I recommend using Nioxin shampoo. It comes in a set with a shampoo, cleanser, and foam. it helps.

trust me im (almost) a doctor.

My ex girlfriend has that problem. She was diagnosed with alopecia areata. One or two spots would show up about the size of a penny before she noticed them. If she let it go, they would grow to the size of a quarter. Go see a dermatologist. Have him inject some cortisone into the spots so they don't grow. Then reduce stress.

I lost hair last fall after my cancer diagnosis - and not from chemo. It was probably the most stressful time of my life* and it's a wonder I didn't go bald. It really freaked me out because I've never experienced hair loss like this before.

Thankfully it's growing out now but I had to get a haircut I don't like to disguise the new growth coming in.

I'm sorry to hear about your recent stress. :( Hope things are looking up (now or very soon!).

*months of wedding planning culminating in a fun but extremely busy wedding weekend, learning I had cancer 3 days before the wedding, learning my mom has Parkinson's two days before the wedding, having to determine whether I could still travel to West Africa for work immediately after our honeymoon (which entailed telling my client I had cancer before I told my family), coordinating calls with my surgeon and my client during my honeymoon, going to Nigeria for work after all (but closely timed to get me home two days before my mastectomy), and getting Montezuma's Revenge on the way home.

Sorry to hear about the stress. Have you been keeping busy and working out to reduce the stress?

I would hate to see you bald.

I can't imagine what you went through SSG- must have been a horrible time!

I'm going to see my Doc next week to try and figure this out.

I don't know how to reduce stress unfortunately. I'll probably address going back on my anti-anxiety meds.

Having a baby or losing one can cause hair loss. I had it after I had both my children. It was very irritating at the time because hairs appeared everywhere - in the baby's nappy, in food, on clothing, you name it there was a hair there! This was a fairly evenly distributed hair loss though, in that my hair got thinner overall not in patches. It did recover. If the patches get much worse or don't start getting better after about 3-4 months, then I'd definitely see the doctor. There are health conditions that can cause hair loss, particularly thyroid problems. The doc can do a blood test to see if that's anything to do with it.

It's common and virtually anything can cause it, don't sweat it. It's most likely a lack of iron or something similar. Request a blood test. There is people who have done some crazy **** in there lives and there health is fine, our bodies can handle a lot because it can resist and fight things off, and if you do have a certain health issue there is most likely a solution for it.

You're right, the body is an amazing thing.

I've had quite the stressful past couple of months, and I've lost weight, had the hair issue, and have had sleeping issues.

I think if I could sleep and reduce my stress level, I'd get back to normal.

Dammit, I wish you had posted this 3 weeks ago, I could have made you a wig as I got my haircut, could've saved some hair for ya! :p

Do 10 minutes of Yoga, drink warm milk before bed and even a hot bath will help destress you.

Are you eating? When I have periods of drastic calorie restriction - either from tummy illness or emotional stress - that's when I notice shedding the most.

Not really. When I am stressed, I find it hard to eat. I'm guessing I am down about 12 -15lbs in the last month. I am def not looking after myself on a lot of levels.
