Is it tacky for women to carry pepper spray?

Recommended Posts

I carry a mini pepper spray on my key chain. This guy thought it was funny in a playful way...is it tacky? Do people think its some joke?

I see it no differently than a woman carrying a handgun, presuming you have it for self-defense. Guys will react how they do. Some might consider it a joke. However, if they ever get it in the eyes, they might change their opinion.

It's a false sense of security. If you don't or can't CCW, get a stun gun or better yet a proper knife & learn how to use it.

no.. it isn't tacky and it's downright smart to carry one.

However.. if it isn't within it's expiration date it is worthless and won't sting their eyes as bad so if it's been in your purse a couple of years you might want to check the date.

At the end of last year while walking my dog there was suddenly a group of drunk teenagers outside. Apparently one of them goes ballistic when drinking too much 'cause when my dog stopped to sniff at the wall a few meters away he walked after me saying "What do you want huh?!" over and over. Hoenstly, if that girl from the group didn't intervene I could have only thought of taking advantage of his drunk state, kick him in the groin and run.

I don't care what other people think - I'll use it as a defense. Especially since I live in a country in which even owning a gun gets you into prison, while murderers are free after just a couple of months. Considered getting a knife too, but I don't know where I could learn how to use it properly. Even the defense classes write on their websites how they only teach you how to run away, not how to handle an attacker when he's already on you.

The stuff we've used was labeled with date of manufacture and was good for 4 years. It was the 2% stuff. Also, if carrying, it pays to train, as well as to test (safely!) the function of the spray just in case of defect.

Back before the sheriff loosened up CCW there was more of a need for defensive tools which required minimum training. Our laws on tazers are pretty strict but pepper spray was inexpensive, easy to get and easy to train so was pretty common, hence women I dated often carried it. I didn't see it as significant, no more than carrying a handgun today would be. I'd take her shooting to keep proficient. Train, train, train.

I have two daughters. if it was up to me, they would carry a 55 gallon drum on her back full of pepper spray. Carry it and don't worry about what others think. It might save your life and I really hope you never have to be put in that position to use it.

It's not at all tacky. It's a good idea.

My ex wife carried this:

https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/7d/c9/9c/7dc99ce6062733291b005ab2e80488b9.jpg

People always commented on how cute the little pink kitty was. If they only knew...

She also had a can of pretty long range pepper spray. I felt better knowing she had these things. Didn't have to use them on any people, but 2 charging dogs got snouts full of pepper spray.

I carry bear spray when hiking or when on walks in less urban areas, specifically for dogs, possibly for people. If you don't think it works, check my spray's effect on an attacking pit bull...

I used to carry a knife and thought about concealed carry, but the reality is I don't want to use deadly force in random situations. If you look at the bear spray video, it's great. You don't even need to be involved. Shoot from a distance.

The only place I have the capability to use deadly force is on my boats, which I take to all sorts of places. You must be your own doctor and police in these places, so I have a tactical shotgun for that.

Pepper spray shows me a girl is security minded and watches out for her safety. I find that to be a plus.

I've got pepper spray on my keychain, often have a knife on me, and am a good shot with a gun. Grew up around guns, and there are several in this house.

Would never aim to kill, but if someone entered my home with intent to hurt me, I would not think twice about firing a shot that will stop them in their tracks. Not one step closer...

I do have one difference from Phoe. If my gun is out, it is only to kill. Otherwise it is not coming out.

This is why, like cops, I have a range of non lethal options before I get to the big one.

I thought about getting a stun gun that looked like a lipstick (I don't wear lipstick, so there was no chance of me accidentally stunning myself). My friend was talking about various methods of self-defense after she got out of an abusive relationship, and that's how I found out about them.

It isn't tacky. I wish she'd had something like that on her when her fiance smashed her head into a cupboard.

I know if I shot to kill, my conscience would eat at me, I already know that. Even if that person wanted to kill me, torture me... I know I could never aim to kill. Only incapacitate.

The only instance I can see where I would be lethal is if I had children, and I was protecting them from an intruder. I always think back to my own mother, during times when there were cases on the news of children being kidnapped and murdered, and you'd see images of the parents in court facing the murderer. She would always become very upset at the thought of it, and would tell me "if that happened to you, I'd be in jail for the rest of my life, because I would've brought a gun and shot that man dead in an instant"

I believe it.

I used to carry pepper spray, but the one time I needed to use it it failed. My fault - it was past the expiration date. After that, I started carrying a stun gun which I have never had to use and also started taking Krav Maga. Hope I'll never have to use that either, but if I do I'm really good at groin kicks and elbowing people in the face.

Huh?

Tacky??

It's about safety. There isn't anything funny, playful or tacky about it. My ex bf got me some pepper spray and I carry it in my purse, although I should probably have it on a key chain. You also need a license for it where I live so it's not at all some kind of funny thing.

That guy sounds like a douche frankly.

At home. Buy a copy of: Kill or Get Killed by Applegate & make a practice dummy. Get a good quality blade that's legal for subjects to own. Train well & keep your blade sharp & oiled. Blades don't have expiration dates.

Not tacky at all.

Funny story. Back when I was in undergrad I was hanging out with one of my female friends. Her keys were on the table and they had this small metal stick thing - about as long as my finger but thinner. I asked her what it was and she said a kubaton and was a self defense weapon. I laughed and asked if she was going to beat me over the head with it.

She smiled and said no. And then told me to grab her. So I did and the next thing I knew I was on the ground and it felt like she was sawing my hand off. Basically she was using it very effectively to apply great force to my pressure points. We all took turns getting incapacitated by the little metal stick. She did this one thing where she would lay it against her index finger and then jab me in some pressure point on my chest. Felt like I was getting hit by a flying cinder block. So cool.

Its not tacky but is illegal in the UK.

That said everyone should know how to defend themselves.

My cousin has taught me how to do things with a farmers weekly that I never thought possible when he found out about my stalker.

You should never be afraid to take care of yourself if you need to.

Yeah, if it wasn't illegal, I'd definitely carry some myself.

As it is (and knives are ALSO "illegal"), if I feel slightly threatened I fist my keys. Never had to use that trick and I hope if I ever do, that it works, but it seems like the best option, if you have no access to self defense weapons

But Tacky?!?! Do you know what the word means?!?!

Learn some self-defense as well. You don't need to join some Taekwondo class either.

Learn to shoot your aggressor in the legs or arms to incapacitate them. It's not hard, especially at a short distance away.

What isn't illegal in the UK? I've heard even certain types of porn are now illegal.

No, not tacky at all. I'm with the others, make sure it's within date and easily accessible, such as on a keychain, otherwise, it's kind of pointless. When danger strikes, rarely if ever will you have time to dig thru your purse to get it. Don't care what others think. It's better to be safe/r than totally defenseless :).

.

Why?

A large percentag of people die from any gunshot wound, be it to the torso or legs. Blood loss and infection.

I am of the schoolof thought that a gun doesn't come out unless you are trying to kill someone. It's a last resort when other things have failed or aren't going to be appropriate.

The police aren't trained incorrectly. If their gun comes out, they shoot to kill. They are trained to use an escalating scale of symmetric response to threats. I do the same.

A gun is only used to kill, when legally justified. There is no other reason to have one.

In fact, if you get gun happy and start shooting people without being legally in the right, or if you miss the leg or they otherwise die...you'll be charged with murder or attempted murder, ruining your life.

Imo,guns are a last line of defense when your own life is in danger and you are legally in the right.

And this is why we have such strict gun laws in the UK...

I think its a good thing personally.

We laugh and jest with our Police on a Friday night most of the time (unless we are one of the pillocks causing grief). In the US it can be quite frightening as your Police are so very aggressive in comparison.

You don't need to carry knives unless they are required specifically for your job.

Just learn how to take control of situations and use what you have as a defensive weapon. A magazine, a dog toy, perfume, keys etc can all be used effectively against an attacker. All none aggressive items and none of which are likely to get you locked up for killing someone or carrying offensive weapons.

And so they should be...

Abuse of animals and children is not permitted. Excessive violence such as snuff movies and where other humans and/ or animals are harmed etc are also not permitted.

I don't know who would actually want to watch stuff like that...??

No firearms instructor that I'm aware of will train you to do anything but shoot to kill. Reason being that firearms are inherently lethal weapons, and that it's almost impossible to train for anything beyond a muscle memory response in crisis situations unless you're at a seriously high level, like military strike forces/Navy Seals, etc. (forex, if someone is actually trying to kill you, you won't be 'thinking' at all, you'll be reacting, and you only really react reliably thru muscle memory conditioning. That's why they train the repetitive motion 'center mass' drills. All you're trying to do is stop the threat, not engineer specific outcomes within such a scenario.)
