I've been suspecting lately that my kids are looking at some "illegal" sites online. I installed a web blocker on the computer, but i think they may be finding loopholes. I'd like to install some monitoring program to see what's going on, if you have any ideas, plz tell me. Purchased ones will be Ok.

What about putting the computers in the living space?

How old are the kids and what do you suspect them of looking at?

Basil and T16 asked very good questions.

Age?

What illegal sites?

What kind of internet access do they have i.e., tablets, smartphones, laptops, etc.

Your situation may be entirely different from mine, but I'll share my experience.

I have two teenage boys over the age of 16. Have they accessed porn sites? Yes.

We've always had an open communication relationship. Growing up, they were less likely to get harsh reprimands so long as they were honest. Lie to me and I find out, not good.

They can come to me with anything, I'll be here for them, and I'm a straight shooter. For example, I'm not gonna tell them they'll go blind from watching porn or masturbating. I'm a realist and rather than having them believe everything they see is factual, I've let them know that porn is an entertainment industry. They may obtain ideas that are intriguing, however, what they see may also be altered footage with special effects that's not an accurate depiction of real life scenarios.

IMO, spying on them or trying to block internet access at their age would be silly. And porn isn't exactly illegal :).

If you're talking about porn specifically you can use OpenDNS settings and they'll block (most? a lot of? Not really sure) porn sites. I know this bc it blocks loveshack.org, believing it to be a porno site. ;)

I agree with the common areas of the house thing.

And also how old are they, and what do you mean by illegal?

Remember if they are under 18 YOU own those devices and you are the parent. If you don't trust they are following the rules with them, you can take them away.

11 to 13 years old. I just suspect that they might be watching porn sites and violent video game. I appreciate all the replies.

Can you go into your system controls/network and access parental controls? If so, that may be another way to block porn sites and violent material sites. Also, set the security filter to high and that blocks a lot of shady sites as well.

At their age, I commend you for being on top of what they're trying to access. It's tough, but you're on the right track.

OK I just have to be honest from a perspective of a 32 year old man who fully remembers the first time I learned to masturbate... There really is no way to stop it fully, no matter what you do...

You can add software on the computer like net nanny or something similar that will give you all sorts of options for content filtering. The same software is available on smart phones. You have to buy this stuff, but there is NOTHING for free that won't have a million work arounds that kids their age will have no trouble cracking.

Good luck seriously. I remember the good ol days when you found out your friends dad had a stash of magazines and you had to steal one and keep it in the most secret place ever, safe and sound.

Have the talk with them if u haven't... Always keep in mind it's impossible to repress instincts and chemical reactions in the brain. Knowledge is power.
